OpenAI upgraded its Chrome extension to bring much of the ChatGPT experience directly into Google's browser, adding a sidebar that works alongside open pages and understands information across multiple tabs. Through a mode called ChatGPT Work, the assistant can also interact with websites on behalf of the user. The update was presented on October 15, 2026, and for business users this matters because research and routine web tasks can now stay inside the browsing workflow.

OpenAI brings ChatGPT sidebar and tab control to Chrome

Sidebar, tab awareness and Work mode in Chrome

Installation runs through the official ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store, followed by sign-in to an account. The sidebar keeps ChatGPT available next to webpages, while cross-tab awareness requires granting the necessary permissions. In Chat, the assistant looks across open tabs and gathers information for answers. In Work, it can control Chrome tabs to send messages, fill out forms, or download files, and it can help organize and group large numbers of open tabs.

The design separates reading from acting. Chat answers questions about pages already in front of the user, while Work carries out operations inside the browser rather than only describing them. During a test described in the source, Work completed a registration form for a free technology webinar with an instruction to stop before submitting. When the industry category was unclear, it paused and asked the user for clarification, leaving final review to the person because even a minor error can cost more time than manual entry.

The release lands as Google works to make Gemini a more prominent part of Chrome, the world's most popular browser. Google controls the browser and can weave its assistant directly into the experience, which gives Gemini a natural distribution advantage. OpenAI, in turn, wants Chrome users to keep relying on ChatGPT even inside Google's ecosystem, so the browser is becoming another front in the contest to become the default assistant for everyday computing.

What this means for companies using AI assistants

For teams that already use ChatGPT, the practical gain is fewer copy-and-paste steps during research and comparison. Several articles about one announcement can be compared for coverage differences, and product pages across retailers can be examined together to organize specifications and deals. Small companies get a low-training-cost helper because staff keep a familiar chat interface, while large organizations can standardize quick page-level explanations and summaries without changing browser habits.

The limits center on accuracy, access, and supervision. Reading several pages does not guarantee correct interpretation, especially with unusual formatting or information hidden behind interactive elements, so prices and key product details still require checking against the source. Tab access means users must consider what is open and which sites the assistant may use, even with permission controls from OpenAI. Work actions on signed-in sites need review before submission, and the value of automation will depend on reliability and the level of oversight required.

The marker to watch is whether Work completes multi-step browser tasks with minimal corrections and whether access to advanced website interaction widens beyond current account limits. Stable handling of forms, messages, and files would turn the sidebar from a reading aid into an operations tool. If Gemini integration in Chrome advances in parallel, companies will choose based on which assistant reduces browsing friction without adding verification work.
